Pickleball is growing in popularity throughout Switzerland. More and more people are discovering this sport, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis while still having a character all its own: easy to learn, tactically exciting, social, dynamic, and accessible to people of almost any age.
In Basel and the Basel region, too, there are already players who are familiar with pickleball, want to give it a try, or would like to play regularly. Nevertheless, Basel is currently missing one crucial element: an official pickleball club or a registered sports center that offers pickleball.
Yet Basel would actually be a perfect location for pickleball.
Pickleball in Basel: Lots of Potential, but No Established Structure Yet
Anyone searching for „Pickleball Basel“ today will quickly realize that while there is interest, the infrastructure is still lacking. There are individual players, perhaps even private groups, open court times, or impromptu practices. But what’s missing so far is a visible hub.
A Association can change exactly that.
A pickleball club in Basel would bring people together, coordinate practice times, arrange for indoor facilities or courts, welcome new players, and ensure, in the long term, that pickleball in the Basel region isn’t just „played here and there,“ but is truly established.
After all, it often doesn't take much to take that first step. All it takes is a small team, a shared idea, and someone who says, "Let's get started now.".
Already available: Free pickleball courts in Giebenach and Liestal
However, the Basel region is not entirely without infrastructure. In the canton of Baselland, there are already two high-quality public pickleball facilities: in Giebenach and in Liestal.
These courts are professional pickleball courts and can be used for free. They were built by the Baselland Sports Office in collaboration with the Pro Pickleball Ltd..
This is a strong starting point for the region. The courts show that pickleball has already taken root in Baselland and that the sport is also being taken seriously by public authorities. What’s missing now is a solid community structure: regular playing times, organized groups, training sessions, programs for beginners, and perhaps soon an official pickleball club for Basel and the region.
With these existing courts in Giebenach and Liestal, getting started would be easier than in many other places. The playing surface is already there. Now we need people to bring it to life.
Why isn't there a pickleball club in Basel yet?
As the Swiss Pickleball Association, we naturally ask ourselves this question as well. Basel has a vibrant sports scene, many international residents, strong clubs, good indoor facilities, and a population that is open to new sports.
So what's missing?
Most of the time, it's not a lack of interest. Much more often, one or more of the following factors is missing:
- a person or small group that coordinates the start
- Regular playtimes and communication within the community
- Visibility for new players
- Resources for Beginners
- How to Start a Club
- Templates for Bylaws, Membership, and Organization
- Simple software for registration, communication, and administration
- an official point of contact for sports departments, municipalities, and facilities
This is exactly where support can make all the difference.

And individual players could come together to form an active pickleball community.
A club provides a sense of reliability. Casual playgroups turn into regular practices. Spontaneous encounters give rise to a community. Curiosity leads to physical activity.
Especially in a city like Basel, with its proximity to Germany and France, pickleball could even have an impact beyond the city limits. Basel could become an exciting hub for pickleball for all of northwestern Switzerland.
